Drew Whiting: In Lights Starkly DifferentI was a producer and audio engineer for Dr. Drew Whiting's album release for saxophone and electronics featuring contemporary composers. I also composed the piece, "Saudade Study", which is featured on the album.
A champion of new and experimental music, saxophonist Drew Whiting has been described (by Diakcritical.com) as a virtuoso whose performances are “exquisite and emotive… manag[ing] everything with aplomb.” His debut album on Innova Recordings, In Lights Starkly Different, features seven recent compositions for saxophone and electronics. "Sad, thought-provoking emotional moods music." - Tiina Kiik, The WholeNote "Hauntingly beautiful work" - Brian Kauth, The Saxophonist |
Birth/RebirthBirth/Rebirth is a new music project that explores themes of human connection.
I began creating these ambient works In anticipation of our son’s birth. We were excited to meet him, discover what he would look like, and watch his personality develop. It was also a time of anxiousness: We hoped that the process would go smoothly, that the baby would be healthy, and that we could navigate the massive shift he would bring to our lives. This exercise served as an expression of birth - the new life of my son, and rebirth - the gift of experiencing life through observing his experience. The sounds feel nearby but just out of reach. They are beautiful, yet foggy and undefined. Sweet, yet mysterious. They are simple, yet hint at so much happening just beneath the surface. Since these works were created while our son was in utero, the process became a meditation on loving someone that I had not yet met, and also more broadly exploring and sharing themes of human connection. |
