Music Videos for a Summer (or late Fall) Day

Over the course of the semester, students in a video class with Brad Hesser produced a music video using songs from my recent solo album, one of which I am featured in! The students did a great job on the videos. It is always interesting to see how your work is interpreted. Here’s the vid I was in:

And speaking of talented friends (see my previous post), my good friend JD Johnson played a large role in putting together a class video for the Visual Communications department at my Graduate Alma Mater, Northern Illinois University. Not only is this an inspiring video, but it also causes me to reflect on my time at NIU. Check out what his class put together:

Lastly, I had a review of my album posted a while back which I thought was interesting and insightful. The author, Lee, has a new website for his audio review blog, Real Gone. Check out the review.

Rocky Mountain High

What better way to begin the summer than by visiting friends and family? Cassie and I visited Denver and Winter Park, Colorado for about a week and visited our friend (and musician) John Statz along with his girlfriend Heidi and friend Emma. Suffice it to say, we had a blast! We checked out downtown Denver, visited Red Rocks, and went to a hot springs resort and soaked in what are more-or-less natural hot tubs. We also spent an afternoon hiking in the Rocky Mountains and had a pretty close encounter with a moose! I also tried my first Rocky Mountain Oyster (I’ll let you look it up if you don’t know what they are). Denver also has a great arts district that we were able to visit before we flew home.

It was the kind of trip that managed to be both busy and relaxing in all the best ways. After returning home, we got to visit Cassie’s sister and husband in Milwaukee, then went home to attend Cassie’s youngest sister’s high-school graduation party (she will be attending college at UW-Stout) and my grandma’s 80th birthday party. We are also excited that my brother and his fiancee are now living in an apartment in Milwaukee. Yes, it was a busy couple of weeks! Below are a few of the fantastic pictures taken by Cassie. You can see all of them on her Flickr page. Also be sure to check out her blog for all the finer details.

End of year one and “King of the Blues”

It’s official, I just finished my first year of teaching at DSU, and Cassie finished her semester of teaching Art History! It’s a great feeling to have made it to summer, and we are looking forward to the vacations, house projects, and time spent together, as well as the time to create some music and art.
To kick off the summer, friend and guitar virtuoso Chris Champion convinced me to compete in the “King of the Blues” competition at Guitar Center. I practiced hard for it, but unfortunately the competition was very tough. Even though I didn’t go to the next round, I had a lot of fun performing and got a lot of great feedback. Now I’m ready to go knock ‘em dead next year! More details about the summer, and my semester recap are soon to come.

“Tips for Talent” and the DSU Choir Concert

DSU Choir Concert: “Hollywood in the House” from Nathan Edwards on Vimeo.

The fun and business continues as we move into everyone’s favorite time of year: Finals week! Well, ok, most people are actually happiest when finals week is over. Even so, we’ve been involved in some great events before semester’s end. We had our DSU Spring Choir concert yesterday! It was originally supposed to be “Hollywood in the Park” as an outdoor concert, but do to high winds, we moved indoors and it was dubbed, “Hollywood in the House”. Nevertheless, it was a lot of fun, and included a “name that movie” game that corresponded to each song that we sang. Congrats to our director, Sandy, for a very successful show! The pic below posted by student Melissa Jean:

Last Wednesday, as I had mentioned in the earlier post, DSU Live and the DSU Diversity Club hosted “Tips for Talent” in the Trojan Center commons area. Not only was it a great success, I think it may have been the most successful event of the entire year! It set some really great momentum for the year to come. I did some performing with Chris Champion and Jordan Lindgren. Here’s some pics also taken by Melissa Jean (thanks Melissa!):

Cassie has been out of town this weekend to go to “Art Chicago”, so I’ve been left at home with the cats. I’m definitely looking forward to her coming home and also being able to spend some much needed time together this summer!

New track: “Frontlines”

I got a little obsessive over the last two days and wrote and recorded a new track from scratch called “Frontlines”. As described on the page, the song is about how we all fight our own battles, whether large or small, and “find our own truth in the great design”. Check it out on my Bandcamp page!
